One of the ways we give back to our community is by volunteering our time at Cornerstones in Herndon, Virginia.

Cornerstones is a nonprofit organization that promotes self-sufficiency by providing support and advocacy for those in need of food, shelter, affordable housing, quality childcare, and other human services.

In particular, Cornerstones’ Pathways to Sustainable Employment program is designed to fill a gap in workforce development and job training programs that do not serve the needs of job seekers in the Herndon/Reston area whose education and skill levels put them at a disadvantage in the workplace.

The program offers vulnerable residents an opportunity to help position themselves better for jobs. It includes a 10-day, 30-hour employment-readiness or S.M.A.R.T. (Shared, Motivational, and Achievement Readiness Training) curriculum which teaches the “soft skills” clients need such as learning to set goals, create an employment/education plan, develop an “elevator speech,” compose a resume and cover letter, understand diversity in the workplace, and learn interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. At the end of the 10 day class, each student goes through a mock interview to practice the skills they’ve learned.

As a capstone, we set up a studio in their office space to take professional headshots of each student in business attire for their resume, job applications or business related social media liked LinkedIn.
